Pickering

Home > Pickering

On a Monday, Pickering is turned into a typical English market town. The market streets are lined with restaurants, pubs and antique shops which serve tourists and townsfolk alike. On a Sunday during the summer months, when the caravan and camping sites are full, there is a car boot sale held just outside of Pickering, a must for visitors to pick up those holiday bargains and local antiques! Pickering is an ideal location for getting to the North York Moors National Park from the A64 and A1. The NYMR (http://www.nymr.demon.co.uk/) provides the pathway through the idyllic countryside to pretty Goathland, also known as Heartbeat’s ‘Aidensfield’.Pickering
PickeringPickering is an ancient town with a 12th century castle, located ¼ mile from the main street. The ‘Beck Isle Museum’(www.beckislemuseum.co.uk) located very close to the NYMR station gives the perfect opportunity to learn a bit more about the past in the rural countryside over the last two centuries. The Eden Camp history museum (www.edencamp.co.uk ) is located on the Malton to Pickering road and gives a unique experience of World War 2. The award winning museum is set in a Prisoner of War Camp, built in 1942 and is only a 10 min bus ride from Pickering.
The ‘Pickering Trout Farm’ provides hours of fun for the younger generation catching their first fish, and gives practice to the more experienced fisherman. ‘Flamingo Land Theme Park, Zoo and Holiday Village’ (www.flamingoland.co.uk) is located less than 5 miles south of Pickering. Providing entertainment, accommodation and a zoo all in one, it is the only one in the country to give all three on one site. Ryedale swimming pool is located in Pickering, next door to the football pitch where Pickering Football Club plays. The Traction Engine Rally held at the beginning of August is well worth a visit. There is an impressive display of machinery and the fair comes to town too!Pickering
PickeringWhatever your need, Pickering not only provides a gateway to the North York Moors but also a host of activities and amenities for the old and young. Bed and Breakfasts and Guest Houses are located in historic Georgian market town houses in Pickering and around in relaxing old farm houses. If you prefer Hotels, there are a few to choose from in the surrounding area, or if self catering is your choice, there are many cosy holiday cottages to pick from. If travelling through to Whitby to discover the inspiration behind Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’ and the infamous Captain Cook, then Pickering can provide you with a good stop to re-charge your batteries and prepare for the Goths that swoop to Whitby in April and October for the twice yearly festival for Goths-‘The Whitby Gothic Weekend’. Pickering is set in the North Yorkshire countryside, recently crowned as the most beautiful county in England. East of Helmsley on the A170, it has good travel links to York, Scarborough and Leeds.
