Commonly referred to as the "gateway to the Yorkshire Dales" this pretty market town is dominated by a medieval castle dating back to the 12th century. Thousands of visitors come to the castle each year. Perfectly preserved, the castle has survived virtually unaltered since it was modernised more than 300 years ago. The castle has been in the Clifford family since 1310 but it was Lady Anne Clifford who restored the castle after it suffered damage during the civil war. The Conduit Court at the heart of the castle is an enchanting and delightful courtyard which will capture your imagination.Skipton
SkiptonSkipton has plenty to tempt the visitor with a host of interesting shops and traditional inns. Cruise leisurely along the picturesque canal with Pennine Boat trips, where good food and delightful views are the order of the day. The name Skipton came from the Saxon word for sheep, reflecting the town's beginning as a trading place for sheep and wool. Originally known as 'sheep town', it is one of the oldest market towns in Yorkshire. The Skipton Little Theatre is exactly that; seating 73 people in total however, small it may be, but it is described as a jewel in the crown of Skipton. www.skiptonlittletheatre.org.uk
